This is my service page - get the compiled binaries for GRASS on Linux platforms. Use the platform independent install script to install GRASS GIS.



The GRASS/Linux (x86) binary package:

Requirements to use the latest binary package:

  • libncurses library
  • tcl8.x/tk8.x graphical libraries and
  • Linux version based on libc.so.6 (alias GNU glibc2)
  • (a) GRASS on Linux (x86) Systems based on libc.so.6 (Redhat 5.x/6.x, SuSe 6.x, Debian 2.x, DLD 6.0, ... based on glibc-2):
    Download current GRASS 4.2.1 Linux binaries. Version 22 with more than 340 modules and latest TclTkGRASS (16MB-package, 46MB uncompressed).- 19. November 1999 (bugfixes, new TclTkGRASS 2.9, cursor key support, updated 24bit XDRIVER
    Install-Script: grass421install.sh
    Usage:        sh grass421install.sh grass_binpackage.tar.gz [dest_dir]
    
          with:
            grass_binpackage : name of GRASS 4.2.1 binary package
            optional: dist_dir - FULL path name to the installation directory
                      default path is /usr/local/grass42/
    
          Example:
             sh grass421install.sh grass421_linuxbin22.tar.gz
    
          You may need to login as root for installation.
    
    This is the GRASS development HISTORY (what is new here).
    (b) GRASS on Linux (x86) Systems based on libc.so.5 (Redhat 4.x, SuSe 5.x, Caldera 1.3, Debian 1.x ...):
    If you have an older Linux distribution based on libc.so.5 you have to 
    download the older GRASS 4.2.1 Linux binaries. Version 20 with more than 340 modules and TclTkGRASS (17MB-package, 46MB uncompressed) - 7th Dec. 1998



    GRASS/Linux on SPARC, DEC/Alpha platforms
    Due to web space limitations I cannot provide other Linux GRASS binaries here.
    Please compile the GRASS source code yourself, it should be possible following the instructions.

    Get additional patches for GRASS 4.2.1 on Linux/DEC ALPHA (64 bit)

    Xdigit Binaries: get it! (150 kB). Xdigit is a digitizing tool. Known bug (please help to eliminate it, xdigit sources are included in GRASS 4.2.1 source code package): Backdrop raster cell map does not work. - Extract file in grass42/ - 12. Oct. 1998
    LTPlus Binaries: go to LTPlus page. LTPlus is a raster-vector conversion/digitizing tool. The documentation is included. Install it in /usr/local/grass42. Run it with /usr/local/grass42/ltp/bin/ltpgo
    RIM database Binaries: get it! (720 kB). RIM is a sites/vector database management system (DBMS) with GRASS interface. Get the installation instructions. Many thanks to Marco Valagussa ([email protected]).
